FDA Recalls “Burst” Gel Remover, Warns About Similar Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled a gel nail polish remover sold on Amazon and other online shopping sites, as it contains two ingredients linked to cancer in animal studies and banned in the U.S.

Though advertised by the company as “non-toxic,” MOROVAN Nails’ Gel Nail Polish Remover is made with methylene chloride and chloroform, the FDA says. Both are considered hazardous and prohibited in U.S. cosmetic formulations.

About 4,000 units of the “burst” gel polish remover were sold on Amazon from August 2025 through January 2026, when it was removed from the site. The product remains available for sale through other online marketplaces.

MOROVAN posted a notice about the recall on its website, though the product still appeared to be available on the site in late April. Posts advertising the recalled gel polish remover were still up on the brand’s Instagram account.

“Burst” polish removers (also called “magic gel remover” or “bubble gel remover”) cause gel polish to bubble up and peel off easily without soaking in acetone, and have gained popularity online due to their fast action.

Experts warn against using any products of this type, and the FDA has published a list of other “burst” gel polish removers found to contain dangerous ingredients.

“This recall confirms what we have been warning regulators and the public about,” says Doug Schoon, Chair of the Professional Beauty Association’s Nail Manufacturer Council on Safety. “Products marketed as quick, easy burst gel removers continue to enter the U.S. market despite containing banned and hazardous chemicals.”

The recalled product comes in a 15 ml (0.5 oz) square turquoise bottle with a white cap, packaged in a matching box. It is manufactured in China, with a production date of 02-07-2024 and an expiration date of 02-07-2027, offering a 3-year shelf life.
