At the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, nominee Jessica Biel wowed in a halter-neck sequined Lanvin gown with her hair in a center-parted, slick-back low chignon created by celebrity hairstylist Kat Thompson, who chose the look "to let the back of her dress have the moment it deserves."
The style was dubbed the "satin ribbon chignon," inspired by placement of the ribbon-like sections of the actress' smooth, shiny hair. Here are the step-by-steps from Thompson, who used Surface Hair products to create the look.
- To create the perfect base, I started on damp hair with a combination of Surface All In Leave-In Conditioner and Blowout Primer to smooth the cuticle, add light control, and protect from heat without weighing the hair down. I then blow-dried the hair sleek using a soft bristle brush.
- Once the hair was fully dry, I reinforced the middle part and applied Blowout Smoothing Balm through the roots and mid-lengths to control flyaways while keeping the hair soft.
- Before gathering the hair, I worked a few drops of their lightweight Bassu Hydrating Oil through the exterior to add shine and further tame flyaways for the perfect satin finish.
- I then gathered the hair low at the nape and secured the hair into a ponytail as the base to the bun. (Pro tip: Curling the ends of the ponytail in uniform will help them tuck into the bun with ease.)
- Next, I brushed the ponytail and gradually twisted the lengths to create the desired shape, securing with hairpins as needed. To ensure that the hairs were tucked in, I used small spritzes of the Surface Blowout Firm Finishing Spray throughout.
- I finished with a light mist of the Firm Finishing Spray to keep everything smooth and in place throughout the night.
