How To: Create Tan France's "French Blended" Hair

Queer Eye’s Tan France is embracing a fresh new color look—and he’s officially French Blended.

The style icon just debuted his latest hair transformation on Instagram, showcasing the French Blending color technique created by L’Oréal Professionnel and brought to life by the brand's Global Creative Contributor, Adina Pignatare. France shared his seamless, cool-toned salt-and-pepper results with his 3.6M followers, spotlighting the natural-looking dimension French Blending is known for.

"L'Oréal Professionnel created French Blending as a technique designed to target individuals who are looking to incorporate their grey hair into their existing hair color," Pignatare says. "French Blending is about giving people with grey hair the opportunity to have low-maintenance color while embracing their greys in tandem."

The technique offers a softer approach to highlights, creating a beautifully blended, low-maintenance finish without harsh lines or obvious regrowth. Pignatare says that French Blending actually includes three different techniques so that looks can be easily customized to the client.

"French Blending is offered across three identifiable services — First Blending, Retouch Blending, and Total Blending — each designed to meet consumers where they are in their grey hair journey," she says.

"First Blending is ideal for those experiencing their first greys. This technique involves incorporating soft contrasts and lowlights to add depth, effectively blending grey hairs into existing hair color without any harsh root effect."

Then there's Retouch Blending, best for those looking to maintain a blended look. "This service focuses on softening the line of delineation at the root, or the regrowth bar, while adding light and dimension to lengths and ends through strategic color placement," Pignatare says.

"And Total Blending provides a full-head blended effect, combining balayage and color for a diffused, premium finish.

"Each technique is designed to give someone with grey hair the opportunity to embrace the color without having to repeatedly visit the salon for touch-ups," she says. "With Tan, we discussed his target look at the beginning, and from there, I strategically placed color throughout to achieve the Total Blending appearance that left his hair looking just as he was hoping for!"
She used the Total Blending approach for France, providing him with lowlights to mix dark dimension back into his hair.  In France's case, the transformation also removed unwanted yellow tones as well.

"From a professional perspective, L'Oréal Professionnel's Dia Color range is ideal for lowlights and retouching as it's an alkaline semi color," Pignatare says. "I also used Blond Studio 9 to highlight. I do highly recommend incorporating the Metal Detox Mask into services, which is always a must-have when it comes to color prep."
