Get the Look: Nicole Kidman's "Practical Magic 2" Tousled Waves

Nicole Kidman's tousled blowout for the recent premiere of "Practical Magic 2" is a modernized version of the star's throwback 1990s curls, according to her longtime hairstylist Adir Abergel. "This look is all about reminiscing on the '90s and channelling her character from the original 'Practical Magic' with that beautiful, free-spirited sister energy," the celebrity stylist says.

"The hair had to live in that same 90s world: a deep side part and a sexy, voluminous blowout inspired by Nicole’s own iconic curls from that era," he says. "For this look, we pushed the length and volume even further. The curls carry real weight and movement as they fall against the dress."

Abergel says the goal was "undone in the best way." He used ghd styling tools (Speed dryer and Curve Grand curling iron)  and Denman brushes to achieve the vision:  "loose, full curls with a ton of body, a high-shine finish, and that deep side part that gives the whole look a sexier, more grown-out blowout feel."

Step by Step:

  • Start by creating a deep side part, then dry the hair and work at the root with a round brush to build maximum lift and volume.
  • Working in small-to-medium sections, use the curling iron to wind the hair in a consistent direction to build a full, voluminous curl pattern — defined but never stiff, with real body behind it.
  • Let each curl cool completely on the barrel before releasing, then rake through gently with fingers (not a brush) to open the curl into a soft, sexy blowout shape without losing definition.
  • Once all the curls are set, work the fingers back through along the deep side part to let the length and weight of the curls fall naturally to compete the undone curl look.
