Three is the magic number and it’s everywhere. The rule of three keeps things pithy and rhythmic, easy to say and remember — think “Just Do It,” “I’m Lovin’ It,” and of course “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”!
It’s why so many ad campaigns, motivational speakers, and even fairy tales focus on this time-proven strategy, and why it’s so useful when leading change.
In your business, you can use the rule of three for anything. Want to boost creativity among the team? Organize three events to engage and excite them. Thinking of going green? Plan three achievable initiatives. Keen to upgrade your service? Identify three improvements and go for it.
Focusing on just three changes at one time and working out how to deliver them is much less intimidating than thinking you must do everything all at once.
The rule of three doesn’t just simplify communication with team and clients; it provides structure for long-term goals, giving you months to make it happen. Start with the easiest to feel the zing of accomplishment, and the motivation will soar to hit the deadlines for the other two.
In the latest research by Sustain Beauty Co., the top intended actions of stylists and owners for 2026 included zero-waste challenges, removing single-use plastics, and shifting over to biodegradable supplies.
For zero-waste challenges, start with something that bugs your team such as color or water waste, or single-use cups and bottles.
Take something the team feels emotional about so they feel motivated, then set a goal with a reward when you achieve it. Not only does it feel good, it’s fun to celebrate as well!
Moving over to biodegradable supplies means trading in anything with plastic or synthetic fibers — cleaning supplies, shipping materials, gloves, salon towels — for alternatives that absorb efficiently back to nature.
Many businesses start using Scrummi disposable, biodegradable towels because they want to cut back on laundry, but all the beauty professionals we work with would never do that if it didn’t also provide a benefit to the environment.
Research shows that clients are much more receptive to sustainability initiatives than owners often think. Using the rule of three gives a strong roadmap to achieve those initiatives, plus the structure and the direction you need to deliver what guests want.
